Some notes on my Clavinet are sticky. Help!

Sticking keys are a common issue on Hohner Clavinets that haven’t been serviced or have been well used. It can be a number of things:

Something is stuck down there:

Whether its a penny or a guitar pick, small thin objects can sometimes fall in between parts of your Clavinet and cause the keys to stick. Unscrew the tuning rail at the front and inspect underneath the key to see if there are any objects blocking the keys path

Old hammer tips:

The hammer tips are old and need replacing. The original hammer tips over time because squishy and often gummed-up the action mechanism. This can cause many sticky keys. It will require removing the old gunky hammer tips. It can be a pain to clean but will fix the sticking and improve the tone.

The key bushings are too tight:

Key bushings in a Clavinet are made from rubber and are positioned underneath the key. They stop the keys from clicking and rocking side-to-side. Sometimes though they can expand and become to tight which will make a key sluggish. Lubricating the bushings and easing the keys will help solve this. If this doesn’t work then they will need to be replaced.

The key springs are old or broken:

At the back of the key is a spring which brings the key back to its resting position. If they’ve never been changed then these are over 50 years old on many Clavs so they can become sluggish. If they’re broken then the key might not work at all. Replacing the springs is the way to fix this problem.

No luck?
